Kei x Kai
Anime Spotlight - Ajin Demi Human
Unfortunately the poor animation really mars this series as it never fully represents how good the manga looks. This is such a shame because the plot is great and so are the characters and the voice acting is amazing especially Sato.
Ajin: Demi-human presents the story of a student named Kei Nagai, who discovers he is an "Ajin" when he is fatally wounded in a traffic accident. In the world of Ajin, a small number of humans (termed "Ajin") possess extreme regenerative abilities that trigger upon death or mortal injury, allowing them to completely recover from their wounds in a matter of seconds to such an exceptional extent that not only can missing limbs be restored, but Ajin can fully regenerate after being turned into literal meat patties. Additionally, Ajin can create "black ghosts", which are highly dangerous combat-oriented entities that are invisible to normal humans and only visible to other Ajin. Consequently, Ajin are considered dangerous and inhuman by the public, and most are captured by governments. On paper, governments claim to protect Ajin, but in reality, most governments use them as subjects for cruel and inhumane experiments, as their abilities to completely recover from fatal wounds provides an unlimited source of organs and bodies in dangerous tests (such as live-fire weapons testing). As a result, Ajin that have escaped from government custody (such as Satou, the main antagonist) are bent on exacting revenge from governments – with the exception of Kei, who wants no part in the emerging Ajin-human conflict. However, in an agreement with Japanese governmental agents, Kei agrees to fight against Satou in exchange for his freedom from government experimentation.
I actually read the manga and its great, tense and dark with lovely art and awesome action but shows the bleak side of humanity. So much is lost on the poor character models who don’t have a lot of facial expression and sometimes more and react in a very stiff or unnatural way. Also the clothes have no texture or movement but the Black Ghosts get a bit more love in their designs and animation but no way near the detail of the manga.
But once you get past the animation the plot is still solid and as i said the voice acting is spot on. Kei is such an interesting protagonist because he’s a bit of a dick and not very connected to his emotions or able to appreciate human interaction. Make him unique and with a unigue Black Ghost. The stand out like the manga is Sato who is just one of the best villains and its worth watching the anime just for him.
I enjoyed the series in the end as it still has all the elements from the manga I enjoy but i really wish it had been given better animation to do it more justice.
